Brands Hatch is the circuit the Nippon Challenge visited as the last event in 2010 so he was hoping that familiarity would be a positive performance enhancement.

The day was a brilliantly warm and sunny day and with sign on and scrutineering out of the way it was time to take to the track for qualifying after noise check. The new exhaust system passed with flying colours at 99db!

Qualifying

Qualifying was a very busy time for all with a large amount of traffic being encountered. Darren took time to warm the brakes and tyres, which were taking part in their last session as they were at the limit. The Swift of Andy McLennon was let past on lap three and Darren tagged on to the rear of him. Darren managed to keep pace with the Swift and on lap 8 set the 2nd fastest time overall but traffic ruined the next lap. With some clear air between himself and the Swift Darren set about a fast lap, only to suffer gearbox failure at Graham Hill bend, limping slowly to the recovery trucks at the entrance of the pits.

Darren was disappointed with the failure after over a season of reliability from his work horse and for the first time getting on the front row on Merit rather than others misfortunes.

The car is now in the hands of sposnors Arden Bridge Services to asses the damage and it is looking like the next round at Castle Coombe will have to be dropped.

First race of the season - Brands Hatch - 1st May 2011

<img style="display:block; 19th September 2010

This was the second visit to Mallory this season for the Nippon Challenge. Darren was hoping for an even better performance from himself and the car this visit as there have been some major improvements in handling and lightening that have taken place. This round saw four Subaru Cup cars including young talent Matthew Edwards and experienced Karen Phillips both entering their second meeting this season.

Qualifying

As normal the track was very busy for the qualifying session. There were few opportunities to get a fast lap in during the session with various slower cars making for difficult progress to be made as the fuel loads lightened. However, Darren managed four relitevely free laps in the middle of the session to claim 3rd in class and fifth on the grid for race one. The session was not without it's casualties as Ian Froggatt in the Scoobyclinic sponsored Impreza failed to complete one lap.

Qualifying Position

5th Overall
3rd In Class

Race 1

As race one's grid formed Darren felt a problem with the braking system on his car leading to a soft pedal and a certain amount of pull to the right. A poor start, with too much clutch slip meant that the normally fast starting Darren slipped to 6th place into the first corner closely behind fast starting Rob Jefferies, in his MR2. Jefferies had a big sideways moment on lap one into the Esses allowing Darren past into the hairpin. Darren's progress was not as he hoped with the braking problem and a small gap to Howells McLennan and Edwards developed by the end of the first lap. A close shave between Edwards and Howells took place on lap two when Edwards' gearbox failed leaving Howells to take avoiding action on the straight but he managed to control it. A growing gap to the cars behind him meant Darren could concentrate on the Howells and McLennan battle in front. Mechanical failure of the swift of McLennan on lap 12 and the back markers saw Darren gain slowly on the Subaru of Howells. However, on the last lap into the Hairpin Darren caught the smoking Impreza of Howells and, due to yellow flags, only managed to squeeze past the ailing Impreza on the line to claim second overall by three tenths.

Results

2nd Overall
1st In class

Race 2

Starting in second place and still with brake issues, Darren had a clear run to the first corner along side the Impreza of Dale Gent. With far more power than a Subaru Sup car Darren was not expecting to bother Gent so decided to concentrate on getting the gap to the cars behind and nurse the car home. The race started and was soon red flagged after a start line incident which removed the Impreza of Edwards, which had had heroics performed by X-Spec to replace the gearbox, and several other cars. On the second restart the MR2 Turbo of Nick Reed came close to getting alongside Darren into Gerrards but closing the door Darren soon created a small gap to the field behind. Over the next few laps Gent pulled away, seemingly also taking it easy. With a shortened ten minute race meaning only a few back markers to pass meant Darren could sail to the line in second place and was never troubled from the field behind.

Results

2nd Overall
1st In Class

Summary

A successful trophy haul for Darren and the failure of Howells' Impreza in the first race means the fight for Subaru Cup honours goes to the wire at Brands Hatch on 24th October with Darren requiring two wins there.

Cadwell Park - August 22nd 2010

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UjUtrD3QoWQ/TICbYNUOdNI/AAAAAAAAABA/taa20Wl9XB8/s320/NipponCadwellParkAug2010-Qualifying30.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512576784095147218" />

Picture re-produced with kind permission of VF Racing

Qualifying

After the horrendous rain of Saturday, Sunday was dry and fine. Darren had taken the opportunity to sign on and scrutineer the day before so it left some time in the morning to make sure the car was ready for qualifying. With new tyres supplied by Service and Sport, Darren slowly warmed them up. However, it was to be a frustrating qualifying. Several fast laps were lost to yellow flags, mainly the Subaru’s of Dale Gent and Steve Froggatt spinning in front of Darren and then at the end of the session to Roger Sibley in his lovely Honda Civic ending up in the tyres at ??? corner. Roger was ok but the car was not fit to continue.

This was not helped by the lap timer giving up the ghost for several laps in the middle of the session and an MR2 being slow to give way.

Qualifying Result –

9th Overall
3rd In Class

Race 1

Starting 9th meant that Darren was on the outside of the circuit. As the lights went off, Darren launched around the outside and onto the grass to pass Adrian Howells who had been slowed by Andy McLennan in his swift, and the Integra of Paul Hughes and the Subaru of Matt Edwards. Up into 5th at this point Darren could not hold off the lighter more agile Subaru Cup car of Howells along the straight. The swift soon muscled his way past on the inside of the Goose Neck leaving Paul Hughes in his Integra not far behind.

For several laps the Integra loomed large in the mirrors under braking and on two occasions alongside Darren but was unable to get past initially. However on Lap 5, a nudge from the Integra of Hughes mid-corner of the hairpin put Darren on to the grass of the exit and dislodged the bumper to cause tyre rub.

This left Darren in front of the debutant Matt Edwards in his Subaru Cup car. Matt is an upcoming young driver with a lot of talent and this showed as he harried Darren to the chequered flag despite his tyres showing signs of overheating with more prevalent understeer.

Race 1 result

8th Overall
2nd In Class

Race 2

For this race, Darren was on the inside of the track, which means not a lot of room for manoeuvre at the start. An adjustment in tyre pressures would hopefully compensate for the high post race pressures and the poor end of race performance from them.

A slow starting Hughes in the Integra in front left Darren nowhere to go and he was passed by a fast starting Matt and Nick Jones in his MR2 Turbo.

Darren had to work hard to get past the MR2 of Jones, which had good straight-line speed and better braking in the lighter car, whilst also fending off the agile MX5 of Jonathan Blake. It was not until lap 6 that Darren made a move into Mansfield which left him the inside line into the Mountain after using his better traction from the corner to gain a slight advantage.

By this time, however, the damage was done and there was not enough laps to haul in the cars in front.

In the latter stages of the race some damage was also sustained from debris from the Integra of Hughes which had yet further incidents with the swift of Andy McLennan and a strange handling characteristic developing. Upon post race investigation it was discovered an upright bolt had come loose leading to camber constantly changing on the offside front wheel.

Race Result

8th Overall
3rd In Class

Summer Break - Ready for Cadwell 22nd August 2010

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UjUtrD3QoWQ/TFZxw3f7cxI/AAAAAAAAAAw/1x_l9vbcga0/s320/NipponCastleCombeJune2010-Qualifying13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500709079225168658" />

Picture re-produced with kind permission of VF Racing

After a summer break, missing the Lydden round, Darren is looking forward to Cadwell Park meeting on 22nd August 2010. The crowds are always large and the racing full of excitement. He also completed his ARDS test here.

On the car front little work needed completing between Snetterton and Castle Coombe with some basic maintenance taking place (fluids, brakes etc.). The only major alteration was the fitment of a standard Subaru exhaust as the noise monitoring is very strict there and the car was showing 105db at Snetterton so it was thought better to err on the side of caution.

Qualifying

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UjUtrD3QoWQ/TCrqwg07WkI/AAAAAAAAAAo/7ujoUUlxQbU/s320/pic+qual.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488457215070919234" />

Picture re-produced with kind permission of VF Racing

The track conditions were dry and the weather warm and sunny for the qualifying session. With the size of field there were numerous Mazda MX5’s and Toyota MR2’s to contend with.

There was not much space for a clear lap and Darren suffered from traffic on every fast lap attempt. The session was curtailed with a red flag when an MR2 dumped a load of oil on the track at Tower corner.

A disappointing and frustrating session saw a lowly grid position of 14th place. Darren had some work to do in the race as the other Subaru Cup cars of Martin White and a flying Adrian Howells were in front of him.

Race 1

Darren had a reasonable start getting the better of Luke Bennett in the Integra. However there were no further opportunities on the run up to Quarry as Martin White had been blocked by slower starting cars in front which in turn blocked Darren

Darren was on the tail of Martin White and Rob Jefferies, in his mk1 MR2 Turbo. Martin soon dispatch Rob with a lunge into the Esses on lap 3. However Darren could not find a way past until lap 7 into Quarry with a bold move the led to a fine drift being held!

With Martin White long gone Darren only had to contend with Luke Bennett in his Integra who was pressing for most of the race but failed to find a way past even with some brave braking into Bobbies.

Results –

Overall – 8th
Subaru Cup – 3rd

Race 2

A better starting position for Darren after some competitors fell by the wayside in race one. Martin White’s bad luck struck again with a puncture on the way to the grid meaning he could not take the start. This left a nice gap beside Darren and only people ahead to contend with.

From the start Darren managed to get alongside the Nissan of Steve Burke but his monster AP brakes saw him take Quarry ahead. Rob Jefferies had a couple of nibbles on the first lap but did not manage to take the position.

Darren was now in 6th position and a large gap developed to Rob Jefferies and Stuart Hutchinson’s Integra behind. However after 5 laps the gearbox oil started to overheat leading to difficulties changing gear and some missed gear changes ensued.

Hutchinson’s Integra gradually reeled in the Impreza and on lap 7 Hutchinson gained the place into Quarry, but was not handed it on a plate with Darren pressing him on the outside to the Esses.

The rest of the race was a mixture of Mazda and MR2 lapping which ended with Darren taking 6th position.

Results

Overall – 6th
Subaru Cup – 2nd

Summary

A disappointing weekend for Darren who expected some better results than he obtained. There appears to be more work to do in getting the car on Adrian Howell’s 2010 pace. Darren misses the next round at Lydden due to holiday commitments and will be working hard to get the car faster at Cadwell in August.

Snetterton May 30th 2010

Since Mallory there has been a concentration of effort on the handling front. The suspension bushes have been up-rated by Paul at Arden Bridge Subaru and the geometry tweaked and corner weighting performed courtesy of PowerStation in Tewkesbury. This has given a base line to work from for the rest of the season.

The weather on arrival at the circuit on Saturday and Sunday can only be described as wet. However thanks to the late start it dried up on Sunday to reveal glorious sunshine for the qualifying. The late start presented the opportunity to get the car scrutineered early. All that can be said is that the car will need something a little quieter on the exhaust front for Castle Coombe!

Qualifying

With the alterations to Sear and the curbing at various places Darren took the first few laps cautiously to re-learn the circuit and test the lines required for the alterations. After a few laps the times came down as did the fuel load and with the tyres warming up nicely started to push a little more. However in the middle of the qualifying allowing Vaughan Fletcher past in his flying Subaru and catching the MR2 Nick Jones meant that a few slow laps were required to gain some space. With the clock ticking it was time for a final push and Darren clocked a fastest time of 1:23.602 to gain him 5th position for the race a mere 27 hundredths behind Steve Burkes Nissan.

Race 1

Darren was confident that he could gain some positions off the start utilising his four wheel drive launch. This turned out to be true and launched past the Nissan of Burke and the Integra of Paul Hughes to 3rd position. The leading duo of Subaru’s in the GT300 Class of Vaughan and Froggatt were involved in a great battle between themselves for several laps which meant that Darren did not loose sight of them. More worryingly was the Nissan and the Integra of Burke and Hughes behind looming big in the mirrors. on Lap 5 after a poor exit at Sear Burke managed to get a nose in front down the straight. Darren, unfortunately, slight missed his braking point under the bridge and to avoid hitting Burke on the racing line took to the escape road. The engine momentarily died and meant that upon regaining the circuit left him in 7th position some distance behind Stewart Hutchinson and with Martin White not far behind in the second position Subaru Cup car. However Darren held this position and finished 1st in class for the first time.

Result -

Subaru Cup - 1st Position
Overall - 7th Position

Race 2

A race of two halves! Whilst sat in the assembly area the rain started to fall. This turned into a steady stream by the time we formed up for the start. With Martin White along side me it was looking like the Honda's and Nissan in front were due a four wheel drive onslaught from the start. From the start Martin managed a clear run up the outside to the first corner but the Integra’s left no room for Darren this time round. The rain became heavier and the Silverstone tyres were starting to loose substantial amounts of grip on the wet, but not sodden surface. The little civic of Richard Johnson was flying and squeezed past on lap 4. The conditions worsened and unfortunately a red flag after a coming together of White and Hughes ended the race, for now! We returned to the grid to wait to see what was happening. the heavens opened and the track became a lake. the grid were told that there was to be two green flag laps and then a 6 minute race. When the grid was re-formed Darren was surprised to be placed 4th behind Fletcher, Hutchinson and Burke with Johnson 5th. I can only presume the positions were taken at the lap before the accident or based on the original starting positions of the remaining field. On the second restart the wet conditions lead to excessive wheelspin from the start for Darren and only managed to get past Burke. During the 6 minutes Burke in his Nissan and Lee Bennet-Neal in his Integra all appeared in the mirrors but dropped back after what appeared to be slippery moments. Darren posted 2nd fastest time in the wet but once again Johnson in the civic loomed large in the mirrors on what turned out to be the final lap. Darren achieved another 1st position in the Subaru Cup but a magnificent 3rd overall, the second time this car has achieved this but a first for Darren.

Result

Subaru cup - 1st Position
Overall - 3rd Position

Darren was very pleased his and the car's performance. The car now seems to be pretty much on the money for a standard specification that the Subaru Cup requires and for the Nippon Challenge appears to be very competitive. Darren is hoping that, noise permitting, Castle Coombe, his favourite circuit to watch at and where he took his ARDS test, will yield good performance and results.

Mallory Park 18th April 2010

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UjUtrD3QoWQ/S9HCM2jT9PI/AAAAAAAAAAQ/DcReHiw7SPU/s320/SNC00164.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463361349034964210" />

Qualifying

The qualifying session was taken at a steady pace as the brakes had to be bedded in and the car 'shaken down' to a certain extent as there had been no time to test after changes to the bushes and geometry. After several slow laps some faster paced laps were attempted and it was discovered that the tyre pressures were a little to high causing understeer through the Esses. Darren’s qualifying position for race 1, 8th overall and 2nd in Class. Adrian Howells in another Subaru Cup car had a fantastic qualifying session to put him third overall on the grid for the first race which meant some serious work was required for the race to get on the pace.

Race 1

After adjustment to the tyre pressures it was down to race 1. There were several two wheel drive cars in front which were the target for the start. This came to fruition from the start and 5th position. However, the lighter Swift of Andy McLennan, and the Nissan of Steve Burke, with slightly more grunt and much better brakes got past into the Esses. The pace was hot and the group of McLennan, Burke, Turner & Hughes stayed together until the back markers came into play. The much slower paced MR2's made it difficult to pass on such a short circuit which was not helped by the fact there were groups of three or four involved in their own battles. After negotiating the traffic there was no chance to get back on the tail of the cars in front and with an 8 second gap to the man behind, tyre preservation was the sensible option. The result was pleasing for Darren though, with a 6th place and lap times on par with Adrian Howells which looked good for the second race. Result in race 1 6th overall, 2nd in class.

Race 2

Although 6th for race two, the Mazda RX7 of Maxim Taylor had suffered waste gate problems and did not take the grid for the second race. This gave Darren a good sighting for the first corner. Once again a good start catapulted Darren past the two wheel drive cars and on to the tail of Adrian Howells in the other Subaru Cup car. After some dicing for second place with Adrian a slight mistake on the exit of Gerrards allowed, once again the Nissan of Steve Burke and the Suzuki Swift of Andy McLennan through on lap5. Again back markers started to make their presence felt although this time for some laps it worked in Darren’s favour allowing him to catch the Swift. However on lap 11 an MR2 jumped out of Darren's way at the sight of a blue flag, into the hairpin and spun. With nowhere to go Darren t-boned the MR2 and spun into the wall on the inside of the circuit. With relatively minor front end damage Darren continued without loosing a place. Result a 5th position overall and 2nd in the Subaru Cup once again.

Overall a good weekend for Darren who is finally getting to grips with his new steed. It had the pace and is a well sorted car. With some suspension ride height and geometry work to do with the added front end damage it will be a busy few weeks until Snetterton.

Many thanks to Paul at Arden Bridge Subaru for some last minute suspension bush replacements being fitted and for his effort thus far for the help provided and also to Opie Oils for the provision of fluids for the car.

New Sponsor Announcement - Opie Oils

Picture re-produced with kind permission of VF Racing

Darren is pleased to announce a second new sponsor, Opie Oils.

OPIE OILS specialises in the distribution of quality oils and lubricants. Snetterton on a sunny Saturday morning at 7am. The schedule was tight for the morning having sign on scrutineering and drivers briefing basically at the same time!

Qualifying - Having to learn a circuit and qualify at the same time will be pretty much the norm this year. However After a couple of exploratory laps of around 1:30 I quickly managed to knock seconds off my time. The car felt good so I gritted my teeth and pushed hard for a couple of laps. This lead to me having a slight excursion -

Image copyright Lance Wittenberg, used with kind permission

However I was very pleased when the time sheet appeared. Qualified 10th for both races and also to my surprise I was fastest Subaru Cup car.

Race 1 - First race, first start. I managed a reasonable start but there was yellow flags waving straight away as Tim Clarke in his Mitsubishi Evo had a sluggish getaway. Karen Phillips was directly behind me and, after an impressive start, got along side at the first corner, Riches, and held the outside line through to Sear. She had better drive out of the corner and got past on the Revett straight. Karen maintained this position until, out of the Sear, missed a gear. I managed to get past to retake the spot. Now running second in the class I held off Martin White for a couple of laps until I missed a gear too. Martin got past into the first corner. We had a good battle for a few laps with me gaining through the Bomb Hole. I was close to Martin when he ran wide from this corner, but I followed him too. I tried to turn under him but the back end of the car was not playing ball. After spinning across the track I and ending up on two wheels before landing with a thump, I pulled off only to realise I had rolled the tyre from the rim. That was it race over. Martin went on to overtake Miles Hulford on the last lap to gain first place.... if only...

Image copyright Lance Wittenberg, used with kind permission

Race 2 - Having re-fitted the bumper and sorted out the wheel I was ready for the second race. The car was not going to handle as well as the rear suspension had been slightly altered during my excursion in race 1. At the start Miles out dragged me to the first corner and unknown to me Karen had had another cracking start, but had gear selection trouble which dropped her some places into the first corner. I fended Martin off for a couple of corners but quickly realised that my car had some interesting rear end handling characteristics now and a disconcerting whine from the rear. I could not fend Martin off and he got past on lap 2. Richard Johnson in his civic was close behind and I had enough speed to keep him at bay for several laps until his retirement. Martin and Miles had sped off into the distance by this time. To my horror I noticed a small blue dot in my rear view mirror. This grew quickly for me to realise it was Karen catching me hand over fist and there was nothing I could do about it! Luckily the 15 minutes ended to allow me to take third position in the Subaru Cup.

Image copyright Lance Wittenberg, used with kind permission

So the position in both races for qualifying, fastest Subaru Sup car for both races and a 3rd place trophy. Not bad for a first ever race meeting... roll on Pembrey.

Congratulations to Martin on his two debut wins in the Subaru cup!!

Thanks to Graham, Alix and John at XSpec for their support and providing the car for this season, Olly and Rosie for giving me back up and drinks, and Richard and Karen for getting me into this!

Testing Times

Today I had my first drive in the car for 2009 in a general testing session at Mallory Park in Leicestershire.

XSpec are providing my ride this year and have provided a very drivable car.
